Name: Lan Xichen
Canon: Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Canon Point: Post-canon (around the Family Feast extra)
OU/AU/CRAU/OC: OU
Age: Late thirties but looks in his early twenties because he is advanced enough that he stays young.
World Information:
Fantasy older China with ~inner alchemy~ (cultivation) flavor of magic, lots of people who can't do it, and also zombies. Link to the series wiki.
Personal History: History wiki link.
Personality:
Lan Xichen is a kind, gentle, and bright person, who had to deal with a lot of pressure practically since birth. With his father permanently in secluded meditation and his mother practically a prisoner, he had to make sure that he was strong and righteous as the next sect leader. Additionally, he cares deeply for his (only slightly) younger brother, and their deep bond suggests Xichen probably did more than usual in raising him. All of these responsibilities he is shown as shouldering with a sweet smile and a nice word for all, and neither his cultivation nor his fighting prowess seem to be suffering.
Xichen is very much a people person. He is very good at negotiation and de-escalation, a diplomat both by temperament and training. He is understated and objectively slightly passive-aggressive, but overall while he could manipulate people, he has little desire to do so. On the other hand, his disposition towards believing the best of people and caring deeply makes him a little easier to manipulate than he should be. After learning the depths of how bad things got because of it, he is trying to change himself enough or at least to pay attention to avoid it happening again, but it is a work in progress.
Despite the above weakness, which is trusting overly much specific people, Xichen is not someone who is easily swayed by the opinions of the crowd. In at least two plot-pivotal situations, he very clearly makes decisions based on the information that he is presented with, rather than hearsay; and once his mind is made up, he is swayed by reason, not emotion.
At his canon point, Xichen is also deeply upset by the consequences of being manipulated over nearly two decades, grief, and guilt. He has been in seclusion after the reveals and losses for months, and he is described as having lost weight, and, very unlike himself, losing his train of thought and forgetting details when he must be in social situations.
CRAU developments: N/A.
Key themes:
Love. This is an underlying precept of his sect and he deeply believes in the necessity of it. It does not have to be romantic love although Lans tend to go overboard with that when it happens.
Trust and betrayal
Listening to all sides and making decisions according to all the information, rather than only one side
Main Motivation: His sect's motto is 'Be Righteous' and he does wholeheartedly believe in that. He seems very aware that while rules can be fundamental to it, they cannot define it completely.
Skills:
- His powers are based on spiritual energy, an inner energy that is developed (cultivated) through processes referred to as inner alchemy. The goal is immortality, but the path to it comes with boons, such as preserving youth, increased speed, strength, senses, moderate control over physical damage that has been caused (including expelling poisons) and moderate immunity to sickness.
- Skills in channeling spiritual energy / qi include creation and use of talismans, creation and maintenance of defensive and offensive arrays, making one's sword fly to ride on as a flying skateboard, limited healing.
- His particular path of cultivation involves using music as a vessel for the powers, which means his music can have various effects (especially but not limited to the undead), including but not limited to: exorcism, pacifying, sealing, bringing mental clarity, bringing mental turmoil. As he is quite powerful with it, this will have a permissions/opt out post.
- His skills include high proficiency in the six arts. He is particularly gifted with painting.
- Does being horrible at chores count as one...? For example, when he tried to wash clothes for the first time, his arm strength made him tear them.
Item: A qiankun pouch (bag of holding, bigger on the inside) with these inside:
- His white jade xiao (vertical flute) Liebing.
- A guqin (Chinese seven-stringed zither)
- A set of acupuncture needles
- An ink stick (graphite stick)
- A writing brush
Sample:
TDM top level.
Notes:
Mo Dao Zu Shi has some disturbing themes including, but not limited to, zombies, violence, child abuse/ mistreatment of children, gore, suicidal ideation and suicide. I will try to give content warnings where such things may be referred to and will include such in the opt-out post.
